(NEW YORK) -- The Brooklyn Nets signed center Jason Collins to a 10-day contract on Sunday.
The 35-year-old Collins becomes the first openly gay active player in the four major men’s professional sports leagues in North America. He last appeared in an NBA game on April 17, 2013 as a member of the Washington Wizards.
On April 29, 2013, Collins revealed his sexuality in a Sports Illustrated article published on the magazine’s website.
The Nets originally selected Collins out of Stanford with the 18th overall pick in the 2001 NBA draft. In 713 career games, he has averaged 6.3 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.
