Kerry Criticizes Syrian Regime on Breakdown of Peace Talks
Published at(WASHINGTON) — U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry called for supporters of the Syrian regime to “press the regime” on Sunday, saying that a “lasting and sustainable end to the conflict” remains the goal, despite a breakdown in peace talks.
“None of us are surprised that the talks have been hard,” Kerry said, adding that while the peace talks take a recess, “there’s no recess in the suffering of the Syrian people.” After talks stalled last week, Kerry pointed to “obstruction” from the regime of Bashar al-Assad.
Kerry added that the opposition “demonstrated a courageous and mature seriousness of purpose and willingness to discuss all aspects of the conflict,” praising their “viable and well-reasoned roadmap for the creation of a transitional governing body.”
After talks stalled, violence in Syria intensified with Kerry referencing increased regime attacks on Syrian citizens.
Kerry additionally called on the regime’s supporters, which include Russia and Iran, to push Assad’s regime to put an end to its obstruction and approach the Geneva talks with renewed intent.
