(SEATTLE) — Seattle Mariners outfielder Franklin Gutierrez informed the club on Thursday that he will sit out the 2014 season because of health issues.
The 30-year-old Gutierrez has been dealing with a gastrointestinal problem since last season and told the team that he’s suffered a relapse. He added it wouldn’t be fair to come to spring training if he isn’t healthy enough to compete.
Seattle resigned Gutierrez to a one-year contract on Dec. 18. The Mariners will place him on the restricted list, and remove him from the 40-man roster.
Last season, Gutierrez missed 106 games with a strained right hamstring. In 41 games played, he batted .248 with 10 home runs and 24 RBIs.
