Mark Mulder’s Comeback Over after Rupturing Achilles Tendon

Tom Szczerbowski/Getty Images(TEMPE Ariz.) — Hoping to return to the Major Leagues after a six-year absence, Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Mark Mulder suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon during agility drills prior to his first bullpen session with the team.
A multiple-time All-Star during his career, Mulder retired following the 2008 season after battling injuries while with the St. Louis Cardinals.
During this past summer, Mulder announced he was attempting a comeback, and later agreed on a contract with the Angels. He had a real shot at cracking the team’s starting rotation, but his comeback was short-lived.
“It wasn’t anything new,” Mulder said when asked about the drill. “I wasn’t going that hard at all. I was backpedaling and I stopped to plant to go forward and I hear a loud pop. I almost fell forward and was confused. I thought my shoe broke. I thought the heel popped out of my shoe. I felt like the ball of my foot wasn’t attached to my foot. I tried to take a step because I couldn’t process at all what was going on. I couldn’t really move.”
The 36-year-old Mulder was 103-60 during his career.
