Not only did they upset 6th-ranked Villanova, but forward Doug McDermott passed Larry Bird for 13th on the NCAA’s all-time scoring list.

Against the Wildcats, McDermott matched his season high with 39 points, and in doing so passed Bird in the process. McDermott now has 2,863 points.

It should be noted that Bird played just three years of college basketball and there was no 3-point line during Bird’s collegiate career.

“It’s pretty crazy. That’s one of my idols,” he said. “Imagine if (Bird) had the 3-point line and he stayed four years. He would be way ahead of me. It’s really cool just to be in that category with some of those guys.”

McDermott has had a stellar collegiate career and is averaging 25.9 points per game this season while also pulling down 7.0 rebounds per game. He’s averaged 21.2 points per game while at Creighton.

With the win, Creighton improved to 21-4 while Villanova fell to 22-3.
