Meryl Davis, Charlie White Win Gold for USA in Ice Dancing

GETTY 2414 SochiIce?  SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1392665331145Streeter Lecka/Getty Images(SOCHI, Russia) — Meryl Davis and Charlie White have made Olympic history. On Monday, they became the first American couple to win the gold medal in ice dancing.

The American pair scored 116.93 points in the free dance to finish with an overall score of 195.52.

Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir of Canada took home the silver while Russia’s Elena Ilinykh and Nikita Katsapalov won the bronze.

“That in itself jusified 17 years of hard work,” White said after the event.

Davis and White took home the silver four years ago in Vancouver, finishing behind Virtue and Moir of Canada. Now the script has flipped and Davis and White can finally enjoy their rise to the top of the sport.

After 11 days, the United States is tied with Russia with 18 medals in the Sochi games. The United States also now has five gold medals.
