LUCIE, Fla.) — After a health scare involving his pitching shoulder, New York Mets starting pitcher Jonathon Niese will resume throwing within a couple days after a recent MRI came back negative.

“They think in a few days he’ll be back and ready to go,” Mets manager Terry Collins said. “So we’ll get him back on the mound as soon as we can. But it was very, very good news. The shoulder is actually very, very good — a clean shoulder. They said it looks better than it did last year at this time, which is great new for us.”

Niese had been experiencing shoulder discomfort, and went back to New York to get it looked at.

The 27-year-old Niese is scheduled to be the Mets’ Opening Day starter on March 31 against the Washington Nationals.

In 24 starts for the Mets in 2013, Niese went 8-8 with a 3.71 ERA.
