(UPPER MARLBORO, Md.) — President Obama, speaking at a Safeway distribution center in Upper Marlboro, Maryland on Tuesday, will take steps to improve the fuel efficiency of American trucks as part of his “year of action.”

Obama plans to direct the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Transportation to develop and issue new standards for fuel efficiency and greenhouse gas emission in medium- and heavy-duty vehicles by March 2016.

Safeway is a participant in the EPA’s SmartWay partnership and has improved its trucking fleet’s efficiency by investing in cleaner vehicles.

Obama will also announce a partnership with leaders in the private sector to utilize advanced vehicles. Additionally, the president will call on Congress to make expanded fuel choices available to American drivers in the hopes of cutting carbon pollution and saving money.
