Phone Scams Targeting Tax Payers

(POCATELLO, ID) – The Bannock County sheriff’s office is warning local residents about a new phone scam targeting tax payers. Investigators say the callers are claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service, and are warning people to pay taxes allegedly owed to the federal government. Recipients are instructed to send in a pre-paid debit card, and threaten jail time for those who refuse to comply. Those who receive the call are urged to hang up and contact the IRS immediately at 1-800-366-4484.
