The 55-year-old Williams previously served in the same capacity with the Saints from 2009 through 2011, helping New Orleans capture their first Vince Lombardi Trophy in Super Bowl XLIV. He left to join the Rams in February 2012, but was suspended for the entire season by the NFL for his role in the Saints bounty scandal.

Williams was reinstated in February 2013 and spent last season as an assistant with the Tennessee Titans.

“As I’ve stated before, I believe Gregg is an outstanding football coach and is capable of taking our defense to the next level,” Rams head coach Jeff Fisher said in a statement.

The Rams are scheduled to introduce Williams at a news conference on Thursday.
