(SOCHI, Russia) — Center Paul Stastny scored two goals, as the United States blazed past Slovakia, 7-1 in the preliminary-round of Ice Hockey on Thursday.
With the U.S. leading, 2-1, Stastny scored his first goal at 2:32 into the second period with an assist from forwards Max Pacioretty and T.K. Oshie. His second score just came under 11 minutes later.
The United States took a 1-0 lead heading into the second period, but Slovakia quickly tied it up 24 seconds in with a goal from forward Tomas Tatar. The Americans would rattle off six consecutive goals in the period, with center Ryan Kesler scoring the go-ahead at 1:26.
The United States is looking to win their third Olympic gold medal, and their first since the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” team.
