Yankees Welcome Masahiro Tanaka To New York
Published at(NEW YORK) — The New York Yankees welcomed right-handed starting pitcher Masahiro Tanaka to the Bronx on Tuesday.
“I’m very happy to be a Yankee,” Tanaka said at a news conference. New York signed the 25-year-old to a seven-year deal worth $155 million on Jan. 22.
Tanaka spent the previous seven seasons playing for the Rakuten Golden Eagles of the Nippon Professional Baseball league. Last year, he led them to the Japan Series championship after compiling a record of 24-0 with a 1.27 ERA.
The Yankees said Tanaka’s news conference was its biggest since 2003, when they introduced former outfielder Hideki Matsui, who’s also from Japan.
