In an event filled with mistakes, the 19-year-old Hanyu fell on his opening jump and then crashed on his third. That performance opened the door for Patrick Chan to become the first Canadian man to win gold in Olympic men’s figure skating, but Chen proceeded to make three errors allowing Hanyu to earn the victory.

“I was so nervous and I was so tired,” Hanyu said. “But I was surprised (to win). I was not happy with my program.”

Kazakhstan’s Denis Tan took home the bronze, as nobody seemed to master their 4 1/2 minute free skate routine.

19-year-old Jason Brown had the best showing for an American finishing ninth.

American Jeremy Abbott, a four-time U.S. champion, finished 12th.
