Tennessee (22-12) never led until the 3:12 mark of regulation, but outscored the Hawkeyes 14-1 in overtime to secure the win.

“We did a tremendous job toward the end of fighting back,” said Tennessee senior guard Jordan McRae, who led all-scorers with 20 points. “We did a great job on our defense. For us to hold them like we did was a great job.”

The Volunteers will now head to Raleigh, N.C., where they will take on the six-seed UMass in the Midwest Regional on Friday.

Meanwhile, Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery had a rough ending to a long day that started with him in Iowa City, where his son Patrick had surgery to remove a thyroid tumor. After the surgery McCaffery took a flight to Dayton to coach his team.

After Iowa lost the game the Tennessee players showed their support for McCaffery.

“Their players hugged me and told me they were thinking of me,” McCaffery said. “I was really impressed with their guys and the program [head coach] Cuonzo [Martin] has built there.”

Adam Woodbury had 16 points and eight rebounds for Iowa (20-13), which was playing in its first NCAA tournament game since 2006.
