Blue Jays Place Closer Casey Janssen on DL
Published at(DUNEDIN, Fla.) — The Toronto Blue Jays placed closer Casey Janssen on the 15-day disabled list Sunday due to a strain in his left abdominal and lower back.
The move is retroactive to Saturday, meaning Janssen can return April 13.
“We don’t expect him to be out too long,” Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos said. “There was a scenario where we could have waited five or six days, try to get back going, but we want to have this thing resolved and not nag at him. He’s going to continue to throw to keep his arm in shape, and then once it’s completely gone, we’ll get him [throwing] off the mound, and we don’t expect to lose him for too long.”
Janssen, 32, pitched in 56 games for Toronto last season recording 34 saves with a 2.56 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 50 strikeouts in 52.2 innings pitched.
