It was Cal Poly’s first-ever win in the NCAA tournament.

The Mustangs (14-19) now advance to play the top-ranked team in the Midwest bracket, Wichita St. (34-0), in St. Louis Friday.
“Wichita State is a great team. They’re a national favorite. They’ve been undefeated all season,” Cal Poly Chris Eversley said. “We’re going to get on a plane tonight, get to St. Louis, Mo., and just go start on a scouting report and make sure we’re ready for Wichita State — and go out there keep playing the way we’ve been playing.”

Eversley scored a team-high 19 points for Cal Poly, which didn’t trail for the final 33:25 of the game.

“They took advantage of our mistakes defensively,” Texas Southern coach Mike Davis said. “They shared the ball well. They had one turnover in the first half. It’s hard to beat a basketball team that has one turnover.”

Center Aaric Murray scored 38 points for Texas Southern (19-15), who is now 0-5 all-time in the Big Dance.
