The Los Angeles Dodger has a swollen muscle in his left upper back that will force him to miss Sunday’s game against San Diego.

“I’m not going to get into specifics,” Kershaw told reporters. “I can’t pitch right now. It’s frustrating.”

The lefty told manager Don Mattingly on Friday that he no longer had any pain in the area. However, on Saturday, Kershaw said he felt a twinge during long toss. The 26-year-old had already been scratched from his start against the Padres on Sunday after an MRI revealed the injury.

“We’re not going to allow him to keep trying to push and go forward,” said Mattingly. “If it was up to him, I’m sure he’d want to keep pushing to go further.”

Kershaw is coming off his second Cy Young award in three years and signed a seven-year, $215 million deal in January. The move will be made retroactive to March 23, meaning the seven-year veteran will be eligible to return on April 7.

The Dodgers (2-0) swept Arizona in the Opening Series in Australia, including a game in which Kershaw gave up one run on five hits in six and two-thirds inning in a 3-1 win. Hyun-Jin Ryu is scheduled to start Sunday’s game against the Padres.
