Appearing on Fox News, former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld remarked on the difficulty the Obama administration is having with Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

According to Rumsfeld, who helped launch the U.S.-invasion of Afghanistan in October 2001 following the 9/11 attacks, the Bush administration had a solid relationship with Karzai but that it soured once President Obama took office five years ago.

Calling diplomacy during this administration “embarrassingly bad,” Rumsfeld said that the U.S. until Obama has had no problem securing BSAs with over 100 countries. Iraq also refused to sign a post-war pact, forcing the withdrawal of all Americans troops from the country at the end of 2011.

Rumsfeld’s tenure as defense chief ended in late 2006 when he became a magnet for criticism over his handling of the Iraq war. He has also been faulted for taking his eye off Afghanistan, which some say has led to the war still being fought today.
