GM Expands Recall over Faulty Ignition Switches

Steve Fecht for General Motors(DETROIT) — General Motors had already recalled 1.6 million vehicles to fix ignition switches that could be faulty. Now, GM is adding 824,000 more small cars to the list.
In a statement Friday, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration announced the recall and said consumers impacted by GM’s safety recall should have their vehicles serviced immediately after receiving notification.
The announcement expands the GM recall to some 2.2 million vehicles even though the company says it believes “several thousand” may have the faulty ignition switches. If the key is jostled while the car is running, it could disable the airbags in the event of a crash. The faulty switches are blamed for 12 deaths.
The company says it will replace the ignition switch in all model years of its Chevy Cobalt, HHR, Pontiac G5, Soltstice and Saturn Ion and Sky in the U.S. GM Says the cars were originally built with the correct kind of ignition with, but these cars may have been repaired using the faulty switch.
GM’s new CEO, Mary Barra, is expected to face intense questioning about this at congressional hearings next week.
