The Center for Auto Safety says more than 300 people were killed in crashes of Chevy Cobalts and Saturn Ions because their air bags failed to deploy. Those same models are part of GM’s recent recall of 1.6 million cars over an ignition problem that disabled engines and airbags.

In a letter to regulators Thursday, the researchers wrote that had they looked at every model involved in the recall, the deaths would have been higher.

GM responded to the data, calling the analysis “pure speculation.”

“Without rigorous analysis, it is pure speculation to attempt to draw any meaningful conclusions. In contrast, research is underway at GM and the investigation of the ignition switch recall and the impact of the defective switch is ongoing,” the automaker said in a statement.
