According to a poll published by the Des Moines Register, 57 percent of Iowans disapprove of Republican Gov. Chris Christie’s handling of the issue that involved the closure of lanes on the New Jersey side of the George Washington Bridge last September.

Iowa is home to the first-in-the-nation caucus that will help determine the 2016 presidential nominees.  Christie has been mentioned as one of those vying for the GOP nod although he hasn’t announced any firm plans about his future.

The same poll found that just a quarter of respondents approved of Christie’s handling of “Bridgegate” while the rest were unsure.

The governor has denied having any prior knowledge about the lane closures, which he said he only learned about when it was first revealed by the media last January.

Tuesday’s poll was published on the same day that former Christie deputy chief of staff Bridget Anne Kelly appeared in a Trenton courtroom to ask for immunity so she could testify about what happened at the bridge and whether it was a move to punish the Fort Lee, N.J., mayor who wouldn’t back Christie for reelection.

Kelly’s attorney has been fighting to keep her emails and phone records out of reach of the committee investigating “Bridgegate.”

Kelly and Christie’s former campaign manager, Bill Stepien, were both fired by Christie when the scandal broke. They are both citing their Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination to not comply with subpoenas.
