Along with firing at Syrian targets across the border, Israel conducted airstrikes Wednesday against a Syrian Army training facility, a military headquarters and artillery batteries.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu justified the strikes by saying, “Our policy is very clear: We attack those who attack us.”

Although the Israelis have reportedly conducted other operations across the border to stop the flow of arm shipments to its enemies in Lebanon and elsewhere, this was the first real acknowledgement the government has made about protecting its interests from alleged Syrian aggression.

Meanwhile, the Syrian military condemned the airstrikes in which at least one soldier died and seven were wounded.

The Golan Heights was captured by Israel in 1967 during the Six-Day War and annexed in 1981.
