The former Super Bowl MVP with the Pittsburgh Steelers was traded to the Jets in 2010.  He signed a five-year, $45 million contract with the Jets in 2011, but never lived up to the magnitude of the deal.

After a second straight injury-plagued season, the Jets decided to go in a different direction.  His $10.75 million salary-cap charge in 2014 was another big reason behind the Jets’ decision.

“I appreciate Tone’s contributions over the last four seasons,” Jets coach Rex Ryan said. “I’ve always admired his knack for making the clutch play. He’s a tremendous competitor who wants the ball in his hands when the game is on the line. I wish him nothing but the best.”

Holmes played in just 17 games over the past two seasons, making 43 total receptions.  In 2013 he made 23 catches for 456 yards and one touchdown.

In a span of just 24 hours, the Jets cleared $17.75 million in cap room by releasing Holmes and cornerback Antonio Cromartie.
