Henderson/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — The New York Jets made yet another move at quarterback on Friday, this time releasing Mark Sanchez and signing Michael Vick to replace him. The team confirmed the news on Twitter, posting a picture of Vick signing his new contract. The contract is believed to be a one-year deal worth approximately $5 million.

Sanchez, who received the brunt of criticism over the past two seasons, was owed a $2 million roster bonus on Tuesday if he remained with the team. A first round draft pick in 2009, Sanchez helped lead the team to consecutive AFC Championship games in his first two seasons. Since then, Sanchez has seen his playing diminished due to injury as well as the addition of extra players competing for time.

In 2012 the Jets signed polarizing quarterback Tim Tebow to be Sanchez’s backup before drafting Geno Smith in the 2013 NFL Draft. Smith would go on to be the starter after Sanchez injured his shoulder in the preseason, forcing him to miss the entire year.

Vick, widely regarded as the best free-agent quarterback, joins the third team of his career after playing for the Philadelphia Eagles from 2009 to 2013. Vick missed nine of his last 32 games with the Eagles with various injuries. The 33-year old is now reunited with Marty Mornhinweg, the Jets offensive coordinator, who coached the signal caller for four seasons in Philadelphia.
