The study, published in JAMA Pediatrics, found that parental monitoring has important protective effects on children’s growth and academic, social and physical outcomes. By limiting a child’s total “screen time,” as well as their exposure to violence in media, parents can improve their child’s sleep, school performance and social behavior, researchers say.

Data was collected from 1,323 students in Iowa and Minnesota as to their body mass index, the amount of sleep they got weekly, school performance and social behaviors.
