Nearly One Million Jars of Peanut Butter to Wind Up in NM Landfill

Hemera/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- Close to a million jars of peanut butter are scheduled to get dumped on Friday at a landfill in New Mexico. The dump is part of an effort to speed up the sale of a processing plant that was at the heart of a salmonella outbreak in 2012.

The problem started about a year and a half ago when the New Mexico peanut processing plant went bankrupt. After filing for bankruptcy protection, the plant was left with $2.6 million worth of allegedly untainted peanut butter.

The bankruptcy trustee for the Sunland company says retail giant Costco owned the peanuts and therefore the butter. But Costco has rejected the 950,000 thousand jars and doesn't want them donated to charity, so they are going in the trash.
