GETTY 32714 ECig? SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1395914775931scyther5/Thinkstock(SAN FRANCISCO) — Electronic cigarettes as smoking-cessation tools? Don’t believe it, says one University of California, San Francisco researcher.

Dr. Pamela Ling of the school’s Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education contends her findings from a study of almost 950 smokers over the course of one year reveals that the use of e-cigarettes won’t help people kick the real cigarette habit.

About 10 percent in the group used e-cigarettes to help them quit smoking while the rest puffed on real cigarettes. At the end of 12 months, 14 percent of the smokers had quit with the rate being the same in each group.

Ling says this proves that e-cigarettes had no discernible effect on helping people to stop their nicotine habit with the majority of users women, young adults and people with less education.

Therefore, said Ling, “Advertising suggesting that e-cigarettes are effective for smoking cessation should be prohibited until such claims are supported by scientific evidence.”
