Google and other corporate participants will create high-resolution drought mapping and monitor sea levels to provide information to a new website launched Wednesday by the Obama administration.

White House adviser John Podesta says the effort is part of the administration’s budget proposal, which includes $1 billion to cope with climate change.

“I’m confident that the Resilience Fund would spur huge public and private investments in community preparedness in green infrastructure and innovative data and planning tools, and I’m hopeful that Congress will appropriate those funds to protect communities across the country,” Podesta said Wednesday.

The information gathered from the project is meant to help communities understand the risks they face, especially in coastal areas where flooding is a big concern.

“Climate change is a global challenge. Every community, every company, every person will in one way or another experience the effects of climate change,” said Podesta. “That’s why it’s so important that we work together across sectors.”
