“He was playing in another zone, not even in the ozone,” Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo said of Payne. “He was in Pluto and beyond.”

Payne breaks Michigan State’s school-record for points scored in a NCAA tournament game. Greg Kelser previously held the record, which he set when he scored 34 points in the Spartans’ 1979 title run.

Michigan State (27-8) shot 54 percent from the field and hit 23 of 25 from the free throw line as they advance to take on 12th-seeded Harvard.

Travis Trice scored 19 points and Branden Dawson and Gary Harris both added 10 in the win.

Devon Sadler scored 21 points for Delaware (25-10) in the loss.
