The Wings retired defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom’s No. 5 jersey into the rafters of Joe Louis Arena before the team’s 3-2 loss to the Colorado Avalanche Thursday night.

Lidstrom’s No. 5 jersey joins Steve Yzerman’s 19, Gordie Howe’s 9, Ted Lindsay’s 7, Alex Delvecchio’s 10, Sid Abel’s 12, and Terry Swachuk’s 1, as the only numbers the Original Six team has retired.

Lidstrom played all 20 of his NHL seasons in Detroit. During that time he helped the Red Wings win four Stanley Cups and won the Norris Trophy — given to the league’s best defenseman — seven times.

Lidstrom also was an 11-time All-Star and is part of the “Triple Gold Club,” meaning he won an Olympic gold medal, a World Championship gold medal and is a Stanley Cup champion.
