British Prime Minister David Cameron took to social media to recognize the moment, writing, “Congratulations to the gay couples who have already been married – and my best wishes to those about to be on this historic day.”

Wendy Anderson says she and her partner had a civil ceremony, but now that they can, they intend to marry.

“It’s that final piece of legislation that solidifies and validates our relationship,” Anderson said.

Opinions on same-sex marriage in England and Wales are mixed. Recent research indicated that one in five Britons would refuse to attend a same sex wedding if invited. However, a poll of just over 1,000 people found 68% agreed gay marriage should be permitted.
