The search for the plane has now been expanded further into the South China Sea and Indian Ocean.

“Two days ago the search area was widened to include the Anadman Sea. Together with our international partners we are now pushing further east into the South China Sea and further into the Indian Ocean,” Malaysia’s acting transport minister, Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, said at a press conference Friday.

On Thursday, two U.S. officials told ABC News that the U.S. believes that the shutdown of two communication systems happened separately on Flight MH370. One source said this indicates the plane did not come out of the sky because of a catastrophic failure.

When asked about the separate shutdowns on Friday, Hussein said, “There are four or five possibilities which we are exploring. It could have been done intentionally. It could have been done under duress. It could have been done because of an explosion. That’s why I would not want to go into the realm of speculation.”
