Soda Sales Drop to Lowest Point Since 1995

SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1396308343609Wavebreak Media Ltd/Thinkstock Photos(NEW YORK) — U.S. sales of carbonated soft drinks fell by three percent in 2013, a faster rate than the previous two years, bringing overall sales volume to its lowest point since 1995.

According to Beverage Digest, an industry tracker, soda sales dropped by 1.2 percent in 2012 and 1 percent in 2011. Additionally, carbonated soft drink consumption reportedly fell to 675 eight-ounce servings per person in the U.S., down from 701 such servings in 2012. The last time per capita soda consumption fell this low was in 1986.

Among beverage companies, Coca-Cola Co. maintained its top share of the liquid refreshment beverage market, according to Beverage Digest, with 34.2 percent of sales in 2013. PepsiCo came in second with 25.8 percent of beverage sales, seeing their share decrease by 0.5 percent of the market.
