Stocks Edge Higher on Positive Economic News

Getty 030514 WallStreet?  SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1395783305077iStock/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — An encouraging report on consumer confidence and corporate earnings sent the U.S. markets higher on Tuesday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 91 points at 16,367.88. The Nasdaq Composite and the S&P both added 8 points for the day, closing at 4,234.27 and 1,865.62, respectively.

Spice and condiment maker McCormack is getting a taste of success with earnings surpassing expectations. The company’s stock rose more than 5 percent on the news.

Carnival’s latest numbers dropped anchor on its bottom line.  The cruise operator’s stock fell by more than 5 percent on earnings that were hardly ship-shape.

Americans are feeling a little better about the economy.  The Conference Board’s latest index rose to the highest level in six years.

The first woman to head the Federal Reserve says America’s economic success over the past century has been due in large part to contributions by women.  Janet Yellen says women’s increasing participation in the workforce, especially after 1970, helped grow family incomes.
