Tampa Bay Rays Release LHP Erik Bedard
Published at(TAMPA BAY) — The Tampa Bay Rays granted the release of left-handed pitcher Erik Bedard on Tuesday.
The 35-year-old Bedard was competing for the fifth spot in the starting rotation, but ultimately lost out to right-hander Jake Odorizzi on Saturday. In 17 innings this spring, Bedard had a 6.88 ERA and a 1.82 WHIP.
Bedard was originally drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the sixth round of the 1999 amateur draft. He was traded to the Seattle Mariners on Feb. 8, 2008 in a six-player deal that saw the Orioles acquire outfielder Adam Jones and pitcher Chris Tillman.
During his ten-year career with the Orioles, Mariners, Red Sox, Pirates and Astros, Bedard has compiled a record of 67-76 with a 3.94 ERA. He has struck out 1,182 batters in 1,228 innings of work.
