The 20-year-old Sano was diagnosed with a strained ulnar collateral ligament back in the winter, but was cleared to throw in spring training.

“I feel pretty frustrated,” Sano told MLB.com. “I want to cry, because it is very hard for me knowing I had the chance to play with the big team.”

Sano 35 home runs in 123 minor league games last season despite dealing with an elbow issue most of the season. His skills on the diamond had him projected by many to big an impact player at the Major League level.

He’ll hopefully be doing some hitting things four months after the surgery. We hope to have the surgery sometime within the next month,” Twins assistant general manager Rob Anthony said, via MLB.com. “He’ll have plenty of time to get ready for next year’s spring training.

Sano was rated the eighth-best overall prospect by ESPN’s Keith Law.
