The decision to meet comes after the U.N.’s Special Advisor Robert Serry said he was cancelling a trip to Ukraine. A release from Serry on Saturday said that the trip was deemed “not possible,” and he would proceed to Geneva to brief the Secretary General of the U.N.

Before the meeting began, a spokesperson for the U.N. Secretary General, Martin Nesirky, gave a public statement in which he called for an “immediate restoration of calm.” Secretary General Ban Ki-moon plans to speak directly with Vladimir Putin.

During the meeting, Ukraine’s Ambassador to the U.N., Yuriy Sergeyev, said that he believes there are currently 15,000 Russian troops on the ground in Crimea.

Earlier Saturday Russian President Vladimir Putin requested permission to deploy troops in Ukraine and received approval from the Russian parliament.

Russia is a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council and can thus veto any council resolution.
