Defense attorneys for 44-year-old Raulie Casteel asked the judge for mercy saying their client is just a sick man. However, Judge David Reader was not swayed.

“Whether the defendant was mentally ill or not made no difference to the civilian population that was affected. The measure of terrorism is on the part of that domestic population,” he said.

Jennifer Kupiec, one of Casteel’s two dozen victims, said the convicted shooter likely knew what he was doing.

“He was an intelligent man. I don’t feel bad for him at all,” she said.

Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette was pleased with the sentence Monday.

“For three days Raulie Casteel terrorized southeastern Michigan,” he said after the sentencing.
