According to the LAPD, Smith was charged with a false bomb report that carries a penalty of up to one year in prison. The incident occured at Terminal 1 at LAX when Smith was randomly chosen for additional security screening. Los Angeles World Airports PIO Sgt. Karla Ortiz says that was the linebacker become belligerent and uncooperative.

Smith reportedly commented that he was in possession of a bomb before proceeding towards the gate area of the terminal. It was there police made contact with the 24-year old before taking him into custody. Smith was later released on $20,000 bail.

This is not the first run-in with law enforcement for Smith. The four-year player missed five games during the 2013 season when he entered rehab following a drunk driving arrest in 2012. While he still faces charges on that arrest, Smith also faces three felony counts of illegal possession of an assault rifle resulting from an incident at his home.

“We are disappointed to learn of the incident today involving Aldon Smith,” said 49ers general manager Trent Baalke in a statement. “As this is a pending legal matter and we are still gathering the pertinent facts, we will have no further comment.”

Smith made 34 tackles and recorded 12 sacks despite a five-game absence for the Niners, who lost in the NFC Championship game.
