Tie, who is believed to be a shepherd-collie mix about 3 years old, was spotted racing the 10:39 commuter train as engineer Joseph Delia guided the locomotive toward Grand Central Station in New York City. The pup began galloping alongside the train on a parallel track starting at the Mott Haven Junction stop in the Bronx all the way to 125th Street in Harlem, or about 6 miles.

As soon as Delia spotted the canine, he immediately notified the operations control center, which in turn gave a heads-up to all other trains in the area to slow down and keep their eyes peeled for the speedy mutt. Tie fell twice during her romp and train operators feared she might be electrocuted or run over, according to a Metropolitan Transportation Authority news release.

When MTA officers Errold Borges and Luis Alvarez were finally able to coax Tie off the tracks, they said; she appeared to be limping but otherwise fine. Commuters at the scene clapped and cheered the moment she was in her rescuers’ arms.

“At first she appeared frightened, but started wagging her tail,” Alvarez said. “Having a dog of my own, I could tell she was very friendly.”

Tie, so named by MTA workers, has no identifying tags or microchips. If her owner doesn’t come forward, Alvarez said he’d loved to adopt her. No doubt she’ll find a home the way she seems to do everything else – quickly.
