Robert Corchado, now facing at least one charge of leaving the scene of an accident that caused serious bodily injuries or death, turned himself in to authorities Thursday at the Orange County jail. He had been on the run since Wednesday, when he allegedly rammed his SUV into another vehicle that then smashed through a daycare center, killing one 4-year-old child and injuring more than a dozen other people.

Law enforcement officials credit public pressure for leading to Corchado’s arrest.

“I think the pressure, I think the pressure from both sides of the community and from [you all] payed off and I think he listened and he did the right thing,” Major Cindy Williams said, speaking to reporters outside of Florida Highway Patrol headquarters in Orlando.

Corchado has a long history of run-ins with the police that includes a large number of drug arrests, time spent in prison, and an arrest for a previous hit-and-run in December 2013. He was expected to appear in court next month to face those charges.
