Archie Andrews will die in the July installment of the Life with Archie comic series. In Life with Archie #36, the red-headed character will, in the words of the folks behind Archie Comics, “sacrifice himself heroically while saving the life of a friend.”

The cover of the issue depicts Archie on the ground, with a blood stain on his shirt, surrounded by his female pals Betty and Veronica.

The follow-up issue, which concludes the series, will jump forward a year, detailing how Archie’s pals Betty, Veronica, and Jughead, as well as his friendly rival Reggie, have honored his legacy.

Archie Comics Publisher/Co-CEO Jon Goldwater says in a statement, “We’ve been building up to this moment since we launched Life With Archie five years ago, and knew that any book that was telling the story of Archie’s life as an adult had to also show his final moment.”

Goldwater continued, “Archie has and always will represent the best in all of us — he’s a hero, good-hearted, humble and inherently honorable.”

Don’t shed too many tears over the impending death of Archie, who made his comic debut in 1941. He will continue to appear in Archie comics outside of the Life With Archie series.
