(Courtesy: WXYZ)(DETROIT) — A Detroit man is in critical condition after a large group of teenagers and men attacked him when he got out of his car to check on a young boy he had just accidentally struck with his car.

The driver, who was 54, hit the 11-year-old boy Wednesday afternoon outside the Clark gas station at the corner of Morgang and McKinney streets, said Jennifer Moreno of the police public information office.

“Nothing was intentional,” Moreno said. “The child ran into the street and was incidentally hit.”

The driver stopped and got out of his vehicle to check on the child, Moreno said, when 10 to 12 males in the neighborhood beat him. The eyewitness to the scene requested to remain anonymous due to the nature of the large group of men beating the driver, Moreno said.

The group fled in different directions and no charges are currently filed because there are no descriptions on the suspects, Moreno said. Moreno did not release the identity of the driver to ABC News.

The boy was taken to St. John’s Hospital, Moreno said, and was listed in temporary serious condition with a broken leg.

The driver, who is also at St. John’s Hospital, is listed in critical condition and is being treated for severe head injuries, said Moreno.

The Detroit Police Department is asking for community help to try to apprehend the individuals responsible for the assault.
