Early playoff exits have been the norm for the Capitals for years, but they failed to make the playoffs this year for the first time since 2007.

Star winger Alexander Ovechkin said the team is in the “middle off nowhere” and “in a hard position.”

As of now, the team’s coaching and management structure has stayed in tack as head coach Adam Oates and general manager George McPhee are still with the organization.

“I don’t really know what to expect, what to think,” defenseman Karl Alzner said. “But you would imagine when you miss the playoffs completely that you do a whole re-evaluation of what’s going on.”

Ovechkin had one of his best seasons in years. He scored 51 goals this season, which was his most in a single season since the 2009-2010 season.
