China’s official news agency says a Chinese ship– that’s part of the multi-national search effort– has detected what’s described as a “pulse signal” in southern Indian Ocean waters.

A black box detector deployed by the vessel recorded the 37.5Hz-per-second signa. They say the frequency they’ve picked-up is the exact one that would come from the black boxes.

The reported signal pick-up has come as time winds down on the battery life of the two black boxes. The recorders, if found, could hold the vital information about the final hours of the Malaysia Airlines flight.

It has not yet been established whether that signal is related to the missing jet.
