The recall involves 2011-2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango SUVs. Chrysler says these vehicles “have brake boosters with small crimp joints; and these joints may exhibit corrosion when exposed to water. Should water enter the boosters through corroded joints — a previously unseen occurrence — brake function may be compromised if the water freezes.”

The automaker adds that a booster exhibiting corrosion outside of subfreezing conditions “will deliver brake function in compliance with federal safety standards.” However, drivers “may experience excessive brake-pedal firmness.”

So far, one accident has been tied to this defect. No injuries have been reported.

Customers affected by the recall will by notified and instructed to go to a local Chrysler dealer to have a shield installed free of charge that will protect the boosters from corroding. Dealers will also inspect the brake boosters and replace them if necessary.

The recall affects an estimated 644,354 customers in the U.S. alone.
