Richie Vought of Iowa Meat Farms in San Diego says the high price of beef could lead many to swap out their hamburgers for chicken or pork. Those that stick with beef are “going for the less expensive cuts,” Vought says.

Alternatively, Vought says that you can also buy beef in bulk. “Chicken and pork usually go three to four months. Beef will go six to eight months, up to a year as long as its wrapped correctly.”

The American cattle population has been diminished by extreme weather, the Los Angeles Times says, prompting the price of USDA choice-grade beef to climb to $5.28 per pound in February.
