Martin, who led Tennessee to the Sweet 16 this season, has departed Knoxville to take the head coaching job at California.

California athletic director Sandy Barbour says the contract is for five years.

“It’s a beautiful place. I got off the plane and I just said, ‘Ahhh,'” Martin said during his introductory news conference. “I think it has a chance to be special here. I think that’s the most intriguing thing to me. It’s a place I could spend the rest of my life.”

Martin led the Volunteers to a 63-41 record in three seasons at Tennessee. He also coached for Missouri State.
The 42-year-old Martin takes over for Mike Montgomery, who retired in March after spending six years with the Golden Bears.
