The Crown Princess departed Los Angeles on April 5 for a seven-day trip along the coastline. The ship left port in San Francisco on Monday.

A spokesperson for the cruise company said that the “increase in the number of cases of mild gastrointestinal illness among passengers” is likely caused by norovirus. The virus, which is contagious and easily transmitted, was blamed earlier this year when nearly 200 passengers on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship fell ill. Those suffering from norovirus may experience diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and stomach pain.

On Tuesday, the spokeswoman said that 37 passengers reported feeling ill, out of the 3,161 passengers and 1,176 crew on board. The cruise line says they “immediately initiated additional enhanced sanitation procedures to interrupt the person-to-person spread of this virus.”

The ship is expected to complete its trip in Los Angeles on Saturday.
