GETTY 4314 SamCat? SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1396519282266Lester Cohen/WireImage(LOS ANGELES) — What is the future of the Nickelodeon comedy Sam & Cat? The hit show is nearing a production hiatus without a renewal for a second season, and one of its stars, Jennette McCurdy, has strongly implied she is at odds with the kid-friendly cable network.

In response to fans who asked the 21-year-old actress why she didn’t attend Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards last weekend, McCurdy posted a lengthy tweet in which she said, “I was put in an uncomfortable, compromising, unfair situation (many of you have guessed what it is) and I had to look out for me.”

McCurdy, who previously starred in the Nick series iCarly, added, “I chose to not go because sticking up for what is right and what is fair is what my mom taught me is ALWAYS the most important thing.”

McCurdy subsequently clarified that her issue is related to “how Nickelodeon treated me,” and not to the racy photos of her that leaked last month.

TMZ claims McCurdy is upset because, the website says, she makes much less money than co-star Ariana Grande, who also has a successful pop music career. When reached by TMZ, a rep for Nickelodeon said, “We have nothing but the utmost respect for Jennette and her talent.”

Nickelodeon ordered a total of 40 episodes of Sam & Cat for its first season, which continues to air on Saturday nights. The cable network tells Entertainment Weekly in a statement that the show is going on a production hiatus next week, “which will give everyone on the show a much-needed rest.”

In Sam & Cat, McCurdy and Grande play two best friends who run a babysitting business.
